Certification area

An economic operator can be certified in parallel according to one of four certification pathways: biofuels and bioliquids, biomass fuels, recycled carbon-based fuels (RCF), renewable liquid and gaseous transport fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO).
Within the certification pathways, certification areas are distinguished.

Biofuels and bioliquids

Certification pathway: biofuels and bioliquids Biofuels means liquid fuel for transport produced from biomass. Bioliquids means liquid fuel used for energy purposes other than transport, including electricity and heating and cooling, produced from biomass.

Biomass fuels

Certification pathway: biomass fuels Solid biomass fuels: means solid fuels produced from biomass. These fuels are used for the production of electricity, heat and cooling. Forest biomass means biomass produced from forestry. Biowaste means biowaste as defined in point (4) of Article 3 of Directive 2008/98/EC.

Biogas and biomethane

Certification pathway: biomass fuels Biogas means gaseous fuels produced from biomass.Biomethane means purified biogas.

Renewable fuels of non-biological origin
